Educate a Child in Africa, Inc. via the Family Engagement Initiative, creates a platform where both parents and teachers partner for the betterment of children. Luba Adeline and Miriam Sabum are teachers who are coordinating Family Engagement in Government Practising School Bonadikombo, a chiefdom in the South West Region of Cameroon. On Wednesday, the 21st of September 2016, Adeline and Miriam attended a planning meeting with a team from Educate a Child in Africa, Inc. The meeting provided them with techniques for the smooth running of the program through the school year.

As part of the modalities to implement Family Engagement, Miriam and Adeline paid a visit to the homes of the pupils who had been added to the program this academic year. During this visit, both parents and teachers dialogued on issues related to the children’s well being. Most of the parents complained that their kids play excessively. The teachers equally observed that some of the parents fail to follow up the pupil’s school work at home. Amongst other things, the teachers advised the parents to always check their children’s books and to assist them regularly in doing their homework.

After the first visit to the respective homes of the pupils, Miriam and Adeline monitored the children for a while. The teachers thereafter invited all the parents of pupils to school for a meeting on Wednesday, the 9th of November 2016. The parents whose children had been under the program from the 2015/2016 academic year testified that the program has been greatly impactful. Mr Njeyoh Kennedy, father of Njeyoh Modest admitted that he is now a very conscious parent in issues that concern his children and that his children are doing better than previously. Sounbella Babila, father of Sounbella Emmanuel who was newly introduced to the program said “…I am very impressed with this initiative and I wish it could be implemented nationwide”.

At the end of the meeting, all the parents involved were empowered with tips on how to fully engage and play an active role in improving their children’s future. Adeline and Miriam called on the parents to implement all what had been discussed for the benefit of their children.
