Educate a Child in Africa, Inc. is currently implementing Family Engagement in Government Bilingual Primary School Mabeta, Limbe Cameroon. The initiative is coordinated by Kepemen Valerie and Henrietta Keng, teachers of the school. Within the month of October 2016, both teachers carried out the first phase of Family Engagement for the term by visiting the parents of newly added pupils to the program.
Valerie and Henrietta discussed with the parents the raison d’être of Family Engagement. The parents’ were happy to participate in the program. Tatchu Claudine, Mother of Ndanga Blessing promised to make a conscious effort to assist her daughter with her studies. Amongst other things, the teachers learned that some parents are passionate about their children’s education but do not know how to guide them to excel. They assured the parents of their assistance and guidance in ensuring the success of their kids.
On Monday the 21st of November 2016, Valerie and Henrietta received the parents in the school premises for the second visit. Both parties evaluated the impact of the first visit and it was agreed that, there are noticeable changes in the parents’ participation which is being reflected in the pupils’ general performance. Nguegang Richard, father of Donland Botel who participated in the program last academic year confirmed that, his partnership with the teachers has greatly improved his son’s performance and behaviour both at home and in school.
As the meeting came to an end, Henrietta pleaded with the parents to reduce the number of chores given to children in the morning before they come to school. The parents expressed the desire to maintain a cordial relationship with the teachers for the betterment of the pupils. Valerie advised the parents to create a closer relationship with their children and build in them young leaders.
